I don't care too much about the number or quantity of competition for the keyword phrase. I am more concerned at the quality or how strong the competition is. What you want to see is low PR websites taking the top few positions. Pages of content that aren't the main page are going to be easier to beat. Look at the number of back links and then use a tool to check out what kind of back links they are getting. Thousands and thousands of back links don't necessarily mean that the website is unbeatable. It is the quality of the back links they are getting that is important.
