Worlds Most Bizarre Plants And Fungi

Plants and fungi are classified as different kingdoms by scientists , just like Animals, Protists, Jeff Goldblum and two distinct kinds of bacteria . However, they both form a vital role in the natural world: cycling energy. Plants take sunlight and make it usable whilefungi decompose and recycle. Despite these noble purposes, many species of both groups are downright weird.
.
.
.
Rafflesias Flower

Smells like a dumpster. Better get in for a closer look.
What is 4 feet across, smells like a dead body, and is a parasite that feeds by growing parts of itself inside another living thing? Flower probably wasnot the firstthing you would normally think of, but the Rafflesias flower from Malaysia is exactly that. The only part of the plant that isnot burrowing through vines to steal their nutrients is the flower itself, which smells like rotting meat to attract carrion beetles, which spread their pollen. It¡¯s kind of like a normal bee/flower relationship, except in this case the bees are beetles who think the flower is a corpse.
.
.
2. Titan Arum

Somebody should put some underwear on that or something.
This big wiener-shaped monstrosity is the Titan Arum, alsocolloquially known as the Corpse flower (botanists arenot the worlds most creative people). Canyou guess why? Yes, it also smells like a dead body. Go nature! You cant make a giant flower that smells like, maybe, a rose? Or do bugs that like dead things pollinate better?
The blooms can reach 9 feet in height making Titans the largest flowers in the world. Unlike the last entry, they aren¡¯t parasites, sothey are slightly less frightening than the Rafflesia since they are just a big stinky flower. It should also be noted that Amorphophallus titanum, is Latin for Giant misshapen pe*?s, and the popular name of Titan Arum was coined by David Attenborough, because he thought saying Amorphophallus on TV was inappropriate.
.
.
3. Elephant foot yam

Has the distinction of appearing in both The Joy of Cooking AND The Joy of Sex
The elephant foot yam is a relative of the stinky phallus up there. And joy of joys, this one is edible! Seriously, the root of this is apparently a yam and is eaten in several countries as a delicacy. It looks like an ugly mushroom, but with any luck, doesnot smell like death. Since it bears resemblance to its big brother, Titan Arum, it also understandablyhas a suggestive name:mutated wiener. Have fun with your weiner yams, rest of the world, we¡¯ll stick with potatoes.
.
.
4. Bears head tooth mushroom

The mop tree in full bloom
These things are about thirty kinds of weird. It looks like an oldmans beard made out of worms, and is actually a mushroom. They are edible, and apparently certaintypes have been found to be helpful in fighting cancer, stimulating nerve growth, and helping kill roundworms. They also grow branches, like a tree. Orpossibly ent.
While many people love the taste of mushrooms, and an anti-cancerpizza would win all the Nobel prizes, but we think most people would agree that getting past theappearance would be pretty tough.
.

.
5. Red Cage fungus

Looks like a ball of living Cheetohs
It turns out giant flowers arenot the only things that smell like dead bodies (aside from more dead bodies), and this mushroom is one of them. Fungi are usually alot bigger than we realize. The bulk of it remains underground, the only part we can see is the mushroom, or fruiting body. But they donot have to be mushroom shaped
in this case, it is lattice shaped and the interior is coated with slime. The stench exists for much the same reason as the flowers; flies distribute the spores allowing more stinky mushrooms to grow.
Unlike the bears head, this one you don¡¯t want to eat. Eating one has been documented to cause stomach cramps, convulsions, loss of the ability to speak and can cause the person who ate it to fallinto a stupor. You may be wondering who in hell would eat a mushroom that smells like a cadaver, well, the Wikipedia entrythat mentions the symptoms also said that in the case documented above, the kid who ate the mushrooms was forced to throw up. And he didn¡¯t just cough up the mushroom pieces, there were two worms as well.
.
.
6. Witchs Butter and Black Jelly Roll

.
.
Worst. Donuts. Ever.

These two have possibly the most revolting names in fungal history.Witches butter is considered a delicacy in some places (Okay, in China, so take that info with a grain of salt) but most of the world seems to think they taste pretty bland. Both types are parasites of wood fungus, which for some reason I find deeply unsettling. They add to their appeal by also being called YellowBrain Fungus.
.
.
7. Madagascar ocotillo

This is the sort of potted plant yougive people you dont like.
We couldnt find much on these save that they are from Madagascar (imagine that) and they are endangered. They have the notable distinction of being on this list and not smelling like fecal matter or dead meat, but rather look like something used during the Inquisition to force confessions of heresy

Making Your Business' Credit Card Work Smarter

Credit cards are convenient financial means for hundreds of millions of people all over the world. However, personal use is not the only way credit cards come in handy. Credit cards can also be a major benefit for covering business expenses. If you own your own business, you may want to consider applying for a business credit card. Most credit card companies offer a number of options for companies interested in opening a business credit card. The type of business credit card your business applies for may depend on the size, age, income and financial needs of your company.

Business credit cards typically have larger credit limits than personal credit cards. This is because businesses typically have a larger budget than an individual person or family would. Businesses can handle larger credit lines because they can keep up with larger payments. Many credit card companies offer business credit card customers a variety of rewards programs that can help their company appeal to businesses trying to select which of the many credit card companies to do business with. Larger companies may have more leeway than smaller companies in shopping around, doing research and selecting which company has the right program for them.

Most credit card companies are quick to sign on large companies as customers because they know they will be able to keep good credit and most likely be able to stay on as long term, loyal customers. Most credit card companies also offer business customers low interest rates and in some cases a 0 APR credit card. Even though most of the time the 0 APR applies only for an initial period of six months to a year, this can be a huge selling point for any size business.<

Large companies and corporations are not the only businesses that use credit cards though. Small businesses can find it extremely convenient to apply and receive a small business credit card. Small business credit cards are ideal for small businesses that need a way to manage the many finances that a small business can face. For small businesses just starting out, a small business credit card can be a great way of getting the business on its feet. Handling initial expenses with a small business credit card will allow a small business owner to begin business, make a profit, and pay for expenses in monthly payment increments rather than having to foot huge bills all at once during a time where expenses will surely be high.

No matter what the size of your business, a business credit card can be a great choice for you. Business credit cards help companies manage finances, cover expenses and survive in the competitive business world.

Tax planning to infinity and beyond...

Another year has come and gone and what's really changed? Are you sitting in roughly the same place you were last year at this time with respect to your taxes–wondering what you could have done differently in your business to positively affect your year- end tax bill?

All too often, when individuals and closely-held business owners begin discussing tax planning, what they really end up referring to is the process of tax compliance. Tax compliance is the process of reporting your income to the Internal Revenue Service and, hopefully, accurately ensuring that your tax preparer takes advantage of all the deductions and credits you are entitled to. Often by this time, however, it's really too late to do any real tax planning. Having stated that, the accurate and timely preparation of your tax returns are obviously a crucial step in realizing the effect of this year's tax planning (or lack thereof ), and there are still things you can do, even at this late stage, to help reduce your current and future income tax bite.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls Because the effects of good tax planning can obviously be forgone without proper reporting and compliance, it is extremely important to make sure that you are working with a competent tax professional on your tax preparation. Because this is what tax preparers live for, and it is their specialty to make sure that you take advantage of all that the tax code affords you as a taxpayer, it is often well worth the additional investment in time and money to work with a competent tax preparer that has a good grasp of your business. Very often, a good tax preparer will earn their fee by recognizing additional tax savings through credits or deductions the taxpayer may have overlooked, or through the timely and accurate preparation of your tax return, which, at a minimum, can avoid the costly penalties and interest that come with late or inaccurate filings. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that the cost of tax preparation is fully tax deductible for your business. For individuals, the fees are also deductible, although this a miscellaneous itemized deduction and in this case, the total of all miscellaneous itemized deductions must exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income before you can begin realizing any benefit.

Whichever way you decide to go, with or without a professional tax preparer, it is important to not overlook some of the common tax preparation mistakes that befall many taxpayers. Here are a few of the most common pitfalls to avoid, as well as a few of the most commonly missed deductions:

Forgetting to sign your return or attach all required documentation and schedules.

Carryover items - Don't forget about charitable contributions, capital losses or net operating losses that are being carried forward from a prior year. It can be easy to overlook these items so be sure to refresh your memory by reviewing last year's return. This type of review may also help ensure you don't overlook other items of income or deduction that appeared on your previous returns.

Disallowed Roth IRA contributions - If you are planning to contribute to a Roth IRA, make sure you are below the income limitations for such contributions. If you are a single taxpayer who's modified adjusted gross income is in excess of $110,000 (or in excess of $160,000 for married couples filing a joint return), you are not permitted to contribute to a Roth IRA and doing so will subject you to a 6 percent penalty on the contribution amount. If you have made this mistake, however, there is still time to correct the problem, provided you withdraw the excess contribution prior to April 17, 2006, for 2005 contributions.

Recent changes in marital status - If you are recently married or divorced, you should make sure that the name on your tax return matches the name registered with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Any mismatch can cause significant delays in processing your return and can inadvertently affect the size of your tax bill or refund amount. Name changes can be easily reported to the SSA by filing a form SS-5 at your local SSA office. Keep in mind, your marital status as of December 31st will also control whether you may file as single, married or head of household.

Education tax credits and student loan interest - Interest paid on student loans can be deducted on your personal tax return, even if you do not itemize your deductions. If you or your dependent is attending college with the intent of earning a degree or certificate, you may qualify for the Hope or Lifetime Learning Credits, which can reduce your tax by as much as $2,000 for 2005.

Business start-up expenses - The expenses a business owner incurs before he opens his doors for business can be capitalized and written-off by the owner over a 5-year period. Due to a change in the tax law in 2004, up to $5,000 of start-up expenditures can now be currently deducted.

Professional fees - The expenses paid for attorneys, tax professionals and consultants are generally deductible in the year they are incurred. In certain circumstances, however, the costs can be capitalized and deducted in future years. In other words, the cost of your tax preparation or legal advice is considered an ordinary and necessary business expense and you may offset this cost against your income. Therefore, this deduction has the effect of reducing the effective cost of these services, thereby making those professional services a little more affordable.

Auto expenses - If you use your car for business, or your business owns the vehicle, you can deduct a portion of the expenses related to driving and maintaining it. Essentially you may either deduct the actual amount of business-related expenses, or you can deduct 40.5 cents per mile driven for business for 2005. This rate was then increased to 48.5 cents per mile after September 1, 2005, due to the spike in gas prices. As noted below, the rate for 2006 has been modified again to 44.5 cents per mile. You must document the business use of your vehicle regardless if you use actual expenses or the mileage rate.

Education expenses - As long as the education is related to your current business, trade or occupation, and the expense is incurred to maintain or improve your skills in your present employment; or is required by your employer; or is a legal requirement of your job, the expense is deductible. The cost of education to qualify you for a new job, however, is not deductible.

Business gifts - Deductions for business gifts may be taken, provided they do not exceed $25 per recipient, per year.

Business entertainment expenses - If you pick up the tab for entertaining current or prospective customers, 50 percent of the expense is deductible against your business income provided the expense is either "directly related" to the business and business is discussed at the entertainment event, or the expense is "associated with" the business, meaning the entertainment takes place immediately before or after the business discussion.

New equipment depreciation - The normal tax treatment associated with the cost of new assets is that the cost should be capitalized and written-off over the life of the asset. For new asset purchases, however, Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Code allows taxpayers the option in the year of purchase to write-off up to $105,000 of the asset cost in 2005 ($108,000 in 2006).The limits on these deductions begin to phase out, however, if more than $430,000 of assets have been placed in service during the year.

Moving expenses - If you move because of your business or job, you may be able to deduct certain moving expenses that would otherwise be non-deductible as personal living expenses. In order to qualify for a moving expense deduction, you must have moved in connection with the business (or your job if you're an employee of someone else), and the new workplace must be at least 50 miles further from your old residence than your old workplace was.

Advertising costs - The cost of advertising for your goods and/or services is deductible as a current expense. Examples may include business cards, promotional materials that create business goodwill, or even the sponsoring of a local Little League baseball team, provided there is a clear connection between the sponsorship and your business (such as the business name being part of the team name or appearing on the uniforms).

Software - Generally speaking, software purchased in connection with your business must be amortized over a 36-month period. If the software has a useful life of less than one year, however, it may be fully deducted in the year of purchase. Also, under Section 179 (as noted above), computer software may now be fully deducted in the year of purchase. Previously, computer software did not qualify for Section 179 treatment.

Taxes - In general, taxes incurred in the operation of your business are tax deductible. How and where these taxes are deductible depends on the type of tax. For example:

  • Federal income tax paid on business income is not deductible although state income taxes are deductible on your federal return.

  • The employer's portion of Social Security is deductible as a business expense.

  • Sales taxes paid on items you buy for your business's day to day operations are deductible as part of the cost of those items. Sales tax on asset purchases that are capitalized will have the sales tax capitalized and deducted over the life of the asset.

  • Real estate taxes paid on property used in your business is also deductible along with any local special assessments for repairs and maintenance. Assessments paid for improve ments (e.g., adding a sidewalk) is not immediately deductible, but is rather capitalized and deducted over a period of years.

  • Other expenses to keep in mind may include the cost of audio tapes (videotapes) related to training or business skills; bank charges; business association dues (chamber of commerce); business related periodicals or books; coffee or beverage services; office supplies; postage; seminars; and trade shows, to name a few.

2005 Tax Planning Items As noted above, the real planning for 2005 should have begun with the beginning of the tax year. Nonetheless, although we are already into 2006, there is still time to take advantage of a few tax rules that could have a significant effect on your current 2005 tax bill, and on future tax bills.

IRA Contributions You have until April 17, 2006, to make contributions to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for 2005. In fact, you can contribute up to $4,000 and take a deduction from your 2005 income for all of it, provided you did not participate in a company-sponsored retirement plan and provided your income falls below certain statutory levels ($50,000 for single filers and $70,000 for married couples). If you were over the age of 50 by the end of 2005, the limit increases to $4,500. Even when you did participate in a company-sponsored retirement plan, your spouse can generally contribute (and fully deduct) $4,000 to an IRA as long as your combined adjusted income is $150,000 or lower, and your spouse is not a participant in a company sponsored plan. In other words, assuming a 25 percent tax bracket, a married couple could contribute $4,000 each to their own IRAs and reduce their current tax bill by $2,000.

Education Savings There are two primary tax-advantaged ways to save for education. One is a 529 Plan and the other is an Education Savings Account. Although contributions to a 529 Plan had to be made before the year-end, contributions to an Education Savings Account can be made any time until April 17, 2006. An Education Savings Account allows you to invest up to $2,000 per year in a savings account, mutual fund or brokerage account (through which you can invest in individual stocks and bonds). Although this contribution is not tax-deductible for 2005, the money invested will grow tax-free and all withdrawals from the account will be tax-free as well provided the funds are used for qualified education expenses (e.g., tuition, books, etc.). Much like many of the tax benefits available to taxpayers, there is an income limitation that must be met in order to invest tax-free in an Education Savings Account. For joint return filers, this opportunity begins to phase out when their modified adjusted gross income exceeds $190,000. For single filers the phase-out begins at $95,000 of modified adjusted gross income.

What's new for 2006 With a new year comes new tax laws. Being an educated taxpayer and staying abreast of these changes will help you plan for 2006 and allow you to take advantage of these opportunities. The following items are new to the tax code within the last year.

The Katrina Emergency Relief Act of 2005 and The 2005 Gulf Zone Opportunity Act; The 2005 Katrina Relief Act was signed into law on September 23, 2005, and provides a package of income tax relief provisions to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Gulf Zone Opportunity Act of 2005 essentially extended the relief provisions of the Katrina Relief Act to victims of Hurricanes Rita and Wilma as well.

Just a few of the opportunities available under these acts include:

  • Penalty free withdrawals from qualified plans of up to $100,000 provided the individual making the withdrawal suffered an economic loss because of one of the three hurricanes (Katrina, Rita or Wilma).

  • Individuals that were eligible for tax relief for hurricane-related distributions may pay the income tax on such distributions ratably over a three year period.

  • Loan limitations from qualified plans were also increased for hurricane victims by doubling the thresholds to the lesser of $100,000 or 100 percent of the individual's account balance. Additionally, loans due from hurricane victims to qualified plans can be deferred for an additional 12 months on top of the maximum repayment period.

  • Non-business casualty losses are generally deductible by taxpayers who itemize their deductions and then only to the extent the casualty loss exceeds 10 percent of adjusted gross income and a $100 floor. These rules were eased by the Act by eliminating the 10 percent rule and the $100 floor for hurricane victims.

  • Corporate charitable contributions were eased allowing corporations to claim a charitable deduction for cash contributions related to these hurricanes without regard to the 10 percent of taxable income cap.

  • Additionally, these Acts contain a number of tax incentives to encourage rebuilding of the areas ravaged by these three hurricanes.

If you have been affected by one of the hurricanes noted above, live in one of the hurricane zones or have contributed to relief efforts, you should consult with a professional tax advisor to discuss the full extent of these new provisions.

    Other changes for 2006 include:

  • Adjustment of the standard mileage rate to 44.5 cents per mile.

  • Increase in the 401(k) contribution limit to $15,000 per year (up from $14,000), as well as an increase in the catch up contribution permitted for taxpayers that are 50 or older to an additional $5,000 (up from $4,000).

  • The Social Security wage limit has increased from $90,000 in 2005 to $94,200 for 2006. Remember, this wage limitation applies only to the 6.2 percent OASDI component (old age survivors and disability insurance) of social security. The 1.45 percent Medicare component of payroll taxes applies to all wages.

  • In the estate tax arena, the lifetime estate tax exclusion amount has increased from $1.5 million to $2 million for 2006 through 2008 and the annual gifting limit has increased from $11,000 annually to $12,000 annually. Under current law, the lifetime estate tax exclusion amount is slated for increase again in 2009 to $3.5 million before the repeal of the estate tax for one year in 2010. In 2011, the estate tax system returns with the exemption amount returning to $1 million. This is an important planning consideration; however, most experts in this field believe that more estate tax changes are on the way. As a result, it is likely these rules will all be modified again before the next set of changes come into effect in 2009 and beyond.

  • The top estate tax rate has also dropped from 47 percent to 46 percent for 2006. This rate is again scheduled to drop one percent to 45 percent in 2007 and that rate will stay in effect until the 2010 repeal. As noted above, however, it is likely the estate tax laws will change by that time.

  • The gift tax credit remains at $1 million. If you plan on making significant gifts during your lifetime, the difference between the estate tax exclusion and the gift tax exclusion must be noted to ensure that you don't get a surprise from the IRS.

Tax Planning - Let's look ahead As previously discussed, the process of tax planning is often confused with tax compliance. Individuals and closely-held business owners that are armed with a good understanding of the tax code can have a tremendous effect on their ultimate year- end tax liability with some good, forward-thinking tax planning. Unfortunately, however, by the time most people usually consider tax planning, they are past the point that they can positively effect a transaction.

Before you enter into any significant business transaction, it would be wise to consult with a competent tax professional to determine whether the transaction is structured properly from a tax perspective. There are often very tax efficient ways to accomplish your business goals; however, without proper planning, the tax opportunities that may otherwise be available in a transaction could vanish forever.

For example, if you are considering selling investment real estate or business property and replacing that real estate with another piece of property, you should be considering handling the transaction as a "like-kind exchange." The "like-kind exchange" rules under Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code allow any gain realized on the sale of the property to be deferred until the subsequent sale of the replacement property. Like-kind exchanges are also appropriate with property other than real estate, provided of course the property is of "like-kind," the determination of which requires an understanding of the tax rules and the various tax classifications for personal and real property.

Like-kind exchanges are also a perfect example of a planning opportunity that will be unavailable if not properly addressed in advance of the transaction. There are very strict rules regarding the timing of the transaction, when property is identified and purchased, and even very strict rules about how the proceeds from the sale need to be handled in order to preserve the "like-kind" treatment. If these rules are not met, you can not have a "like-kind exchange."

The "like-kind exchange" example was simply meant to illustrate how important it is to address the tax ramifications in advance of an impending transaction. Always keep your professional advisors in the loop when considering any significant business transaction or your opportunity may be lost, which can have significant costs that perhaps could have been avoided. Remember, good tax planning is not about making sure your tax returns are properly prepared and that you have availed yourself of all the appropriate tax deductions and credits available to you and your business. It is really about structuring your business and your transactions in a way that not only meet your business needs, but do so in the most tax advantaged manner.

  • Can You Protect Your Portfolio from the Sales Teams?

When you make an investment – from a simple bank certificate of deposit to a large shopping mall – you are going to be buying from someone whose greatest skill is employing sales closing techniques. Their skill in closing a sale will not include safeguarding your money or earning you any profit. And their number one priority is to make their sales quota to keep their job. It is only your personal education, experience and due diligence that can protect your money from the numerous people on the other side of the table.

It is a dilemma that in order to invest, you'll be face to face with professionals who do not have your financial interest at stake – but they will all appear to be. Sales people will appear to be on your side right up until the moment you write a check or sign a commitment. Then any problems are yours alone, their verbal promises go up in smoke, they stop returning your phone calls and the fine print suddenly negates the possibility of getting a single dime back from your investment. In my experience, a salesperson's top priority is never your best financial interest, and you need to realize this no matter how friendly they are or how polished their sales pitch appears. As you walk into a bank or brokerage office, or call a broker, you need to keep in mind that their personal goal is not in alignment with yours. To see past their sales routine, you need specific education, experience with the industry, and, hopefully, a knowledgeable mentor.

For example, I once received a solicitation from a loan broker who wanted to get me into a triple-net lease commercial building with a million-dollar loan. After a few questions it was clear that he was acquainted with lending, but not very experienced. But continued questioning revealed that his knowledge of commercial real estate would barely fill a thimble. And he was the principal agent trying to slam me into a million-dollar loan so he could collect a commission check and move on to the next deal. Although he sounded quite confident on the phone, his responses destroyed my trust in his ability to maneuver through the numerous issues and problems in my best interest. By studying an industry and talking to experienced players, you'll be better able to ask questions with impact. And in this case, it was the difference between me keeping my money or locking myself into a contract guaranteed to be a huge financial disaster.

To inoculate yourself against sales pitches, you need to do a lot of comparison shopping or at least become a semi-professional in the industry you want to invest in. Develop a healthy amount of suspicion and skepticism of any sales claim, and hire experienced professionals to assist you on your side of the table. These would be attorneys, accountants, financial and operational experts that are being paid directly from you to assess every aspect of a complex transaction. He or she will support you in areas that you may be weak, and ask all of the confrontational questions that need to be addressed before you sign anything.

Due diligence acts as a barrier between your money and all the people that want some of it. I personally want Fort Knox around my money, so I make the effort to educate myself as to what is going on in the areas that I want to invest in. I take some facts that are offered to me and verify them independently, and then I get more facts and continue the process until I feel comfortable enough with the people I am dealing with. If I depend upon the sales people to perform due diligence for me, it is no better than throwing money into the wind and hoping for the best.

Competing With Color Levels The Playing Field

According to the United States Small Business Administration, small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employers. There are an estimated 22 million small and midsize businesses (SMBs) in the U.S. today. Such companies are constantly challenged with the need to create a huge impact in a noisy marketplace with a limited budget.

Today, affordable imaging and printing technology makes it possible to build an in-house marketing program. In fact, Revival Lighting, a vintage lighting fixtures company in Spokane, Wash., cut the cost of producing marketing materials 90 percent when they brought marketing in-house. In addition, because marketing materials can age quickly and frequently need updating, companies with the flexibility to respond on the fly will impress customers while reducing costs.

Color has become an effective, even necessary tool in marketing materials. According to a study by Loyola College in Maryland, using color increases brand recognition by up to 80 percent.

Bold and multicolored designs can impact people's moods. Environmental green is considered hip and has taken on new, positive associations, while the combination of blue and floral reds has been found to evoke vintage designs and heritage, according to a 2005 study by The Color Association of the U.S.

In addition to printing materials in-house, SMBs should take advantage of inexpensive and often free marketing services that are available on the Web. For example, HP hosts an in-house-marketing portal for entrepreneurs and SMBs. It contains case studies, how-to seminars and other free tools and information, including over 200 free marketing templates ranging from brochures to an image library.

Blogs-online journals or newsletters intended for general public consumption-are another great tool for learning more about how to use color and create marketing materials in-house. To save time and money, SMB marketing guru John Jantsch, who maintains the popular blog Duct Tape Marketing, recommends that businesses create a marketing kit describing you, your company, services provided and what sets your business apart from the rest.

To improve marketing effectiveness on a shoestring budget, bring it in-house, remember to use color, take advantage of free services and seek out expert advice.

    Steady Employment after Training

One of the key benefits of training through the National Heavy Equipment Operators School is the sheer abundance of employment opportunities that you will enjoy afterward. It's hardly a secret that the economy in the United States has seen better days; the cost of living has skyrocketed, and with wages largely remaining stagnant, it has become increasingly difficult to stretch a dollar and make ends meet. There just aren't as many good jobs out there as there have been in the past.

Be that as it may, there is one industry that has demonstrated a sustained, regular growth regardless of the economic climate. The construction industry has remained the largest service industry in the United States for years, and this trend shows little sign of abating. As the majority of people in this country can attest, constructions projects of various shapes and sizes are always in effect. Road crews routinely perform street maintenance. State and local governments employ heavy equipment operators for everything from road clearing to strip mining. Some major metropolitan areas are even in the midst of multi-year, multi-billion dollar highway renovation projects.

With the amount of money that is being dedicated to these construction projects, not just anybody is selected to work on them. Private companies and governmental agencies want to be assured that only the best-qualified applicants are selected to operate the heavy machinery in use. Here, the National Heavy Equipment Operators School can help you to differentiate yourself from the others. While many people believe that experience in the construction field is the only qualification that matters, the influx of construction projects and heavy equipment needs has changed the climate somewhat. Our program at National is the only accredited heavy equipment training program in the country, and thus a certificate of successful completion is highly regarded and respected in the industry. Simply put, our training program will help you get started in the heavy equipment field.

The training course itself at National is convenient and thorough. It is divided into one half home schooling and one half on-site equipment training at our facility in North Florida. The cost and time commitment for the successful completion of our program is comparatively minimal, and yet the benefits of it can be tremendous. With the right combination of desire, integrity, and training, you can assure yourself of reliable and lucrative employment opportunities for years to come.

    Understanding Marketing Tax Deductions

Marketing is a necessary expense in running practically any business and the IRS acknowledges as much. You may run advertisements on or in the Internet, radio, television, magazines, newspapers and other media to sell your products or services. You should be deducting all of the associated costs on your tax returns.

    Ordinary Marketing Expenses

Marketing costs must be "ordinary and necessary" business expenses in order to be deductible. Put in layman's terms, you marketing must be reasonably related to the promotion of your business and the expense amount must be a reasonable amount.

    Deductible Marketing Expenses

Common deductible marketing expenses include the costs associated with the following items:

    A. Yellow Page Advertisements,

    B. Business Cards,

    C. Advertisements in print media such as newspapers,

    D. Telemarketing,

    E. Business Cards,

    F. Web site costs including creation and maintenance,

    G. Costs for Advertisements on the Internet,

    H. Billboards, and

    I. Graphic design costs.

    Goodwill Marketing For Your Business

Marketing that is intended to portray your business positively can be deducted. Such marketing creates a long-term potential for business and, thus, falls within the ordinary and normal requirements of the tax code. Examples of such marketing include:

    A. Sponsoring local youth sports teams,

    B. Distributing samples of your business product, and

    C. Costs associated with prizes offered by your business in a contest.

As long as your marketing expenses can be reasonably related to the promotion of your business, you should be deducting said expenses from your gross revenues. If you failed to claim any such expenses on your tax returns, your probably overpaid your taxes.

Do's and Don'ts of Launching a Small Business Website

Launching a small business website can seem like an enormous task ,although it does require some research, if done right it might be just the marketing tool your business needs. The road to a website is filled with website designers, website developers and graphic designers. This in itself is very confusing. A website designer is someone who produces the design. A website developer is someone who creates more of the program side to your websites rather than the actual design. Nowadays most website designers are also developers. A graphic designer is the person who makes the images at the top of web pages, the buttons, and menus on a website. The whole process should not be so difficult and full of surprises. Therefore the 6 Do's and Don'ts should be a great start to help you launch your small business website.

Don't concentrate on images and how pretty your site will be. Remember that your sites' purpose is to answer your customers questions and inform your customers of what you have to offer, such as services and products. Don't use too many images because if your site is so "new age" a lot of people will not be able to navigate and find their way around it therefore they will get frustrated and not stay on your site and that would defeat the sites purpose.

Don't compare web designers by their price. Not all web designers are created equal. You must not only compare the price but the type of service you will require such as internet marketing and updates, will they continue to create the site until you are satisfied, and can they write the content. Some designers will create you a site and mail you a CD with the files and you will then have to figure it out on your own how to get it on the web. Others will help you choose a domain and a hosting company, upload your files to your site, and will write your content. Writing on the web is different from writing in print. A good content writer will know what to say to keep your visitors on your site. Keep these things in mind when choosing a web designer.

Don't hire a web designer until you are ready. Once you are finished shopping around for a web designer, do make sure you have purchased a domain name, hosting, have a general idea of what you would like your site to look like and written your content, if you will be doing this yourself. This is important! Web designers work virtually, that is directly on-line (through the Internet). You might not actually ever meet them. This style of work is very different from working face to face and have times set up as to when you will meet. It actually benefits you, the designer can get your website on-line faster. Therefore it is important for the web designer to have all your information. If they have to wait a week or so for you website content then you will be pushed to the back burner.

Do request a quote from a few web designers before you decide on one. Once you have looked at some websites find a few who you like and request a quote from them. Explain that you are interested in a website, explain a little bit about your business, how many pages would your site need and what are other services you would need from them. Ask them to send you a price detailing what would be included. Understand that this is a quote and if you are requesting any other additional services there will be an additional cost although designers will usually let you know beforehand.

Do plan on keeping your site up-to-date. Keeping your site updated keeps your customers coming back to either find out what's going on with your company or about new promotions or sales. It also gives your customers the impression that you care about keeping them informed and that you value their business. The benefit of having a website is it's easy to update and don't cost much. Usually a web design firm will have special packages for updates. Find a designer who also can provide updates and when your site is finished discuss an update schedule and what they can suggest to keep your site looking fresh.

Do find a designer who specializes in small business. Small design firms understand the needs of another small business and are more likely to be more personal with your questions. A big design firm might have 5 people working on your website and they might not all have gotten the e-mail that stated what you want. Whereas a small design firm would have one person working on your site with whom you communicate directly.

This guide to launching a small business website is just the tip of the iceberg. The best thing is always know what you are going to receive in return for your hard earned cash. Make sure that your website is like an investment and that you are actually going to receive a return on your investment. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions! Most designers will answer most of your questions, no problem.

    Credit Scores Explained

Research has recently suggested that consumers who apply for loans and other forms of credit too often through comparison websites may risk damaging their credit rating.

It is estimated that 8.7 million people have bought financial products such as loans, credit cards and insurance through using comparison websites over the past year.

However, research shows that the sites could be leading consumers to adversely affect their credit rating as many of the comparison, or aggregator, sites concentrate on price rather than quality of service or suitability of a product.

As a result, consumers are drawn in to applying for unsuitable products and are therefore continuously rejected.

Although rejections are not held on a person's credit record, applications for credit do show up as "footprints".

Consumer affairs manager at credit rating company Experian, said: "All the applications you have made for credit over the past 12 months will show up on your credit report.

"When a lender carries out a credit check they will see those applications and if there are a large number of them it may make them think that you are desperate for credit, or it may even look as though someone has been fraudulently trying to apply for credit in your name," he said.

The financial comparison site that commission the report, MoneyExpert.com, states on their website that 2.8 million people have made applications for 3.5 million financial products over the past year. Around 6 per cent of people have been rejected when applying for credit cards, mortgages and loans.

MoneyExpert.com has launched a credit profiling service that allows consumers to tailor their search so that only those credit providers whose lending criteria suits their credit rating appear on the list.

The profile is based on the consumer's answers to questions about their history and no footprint is left on the consumer's credit record.

Professionals in the financial industry are now calling on all comparison sites to offer a similar service. Customers must also be warned about the potential damage to credit rating that could be done by making too many applications.

Website's should also improve their offer to consumers by being more transparent on fees and charges imposed by providers. They also need to broaden the focus of sites to include service and features other than price.

No one has an automatic right to credit, but if you are refused on the basis of your credit rating you can tackle the problem.

If the decision to refuse you credit was made by a computerised credit scoring system, you have the right to ask the lender to review the decision.

Most High Street lenders will make a decision on whether or not to grant you credit on the basis of information supplied by the UK's two leading credit reference agencies - Experian and Equifax.

These two firms compile credit histories from a host of different sources such as:

    · Data held by the agencies
    · Electoral register
    · County Court judgments
    · Bankruptcy and administration orders
    · Credit payment history
    · House repossessions

Your record will be highlighted if you have had a large number of credit checks carried out. Everything from buying a freezer on an interest-free deal to opening a new credit card will leave an electronic footprint on your credit history.

However, the decision to refuse credit will be made by the lenders, based on their own criteria, but if you are refused credit you could check your credit history to make sure no mistakes have been made.

Within 28 days of your last contact about a credit deal, ask the lender for the name and address of the agency which provided the information. You can then write to the agency yourself and ask to see your information on their files.

To do this you will need to send a £2 fee, give your full name, address and postcode, as well as the details of your addresses over the past six years.

If you are a sole trader or partnership, give your business name and address in case your information is held under those details. The agency must then reply within seven days.

If you find the decision to refuse your credit was unjustified or wrong, and there is further relevant information which may change the lender's mind, you can ask the lender how to go about having the decision reviewed.

You can ask for your credit history to be changed if it is incorrect or includes details about people with whom you no longer have financial connections with.

You can also have notes attached to explain certain periods in your history. However, you can't get information removed just because you might find it embarrassing.

Most national newspapers advertise companies claiming they will repair your credit rating. However, these firms offer will charge a high fee.

You have the right to ask credit companies in writing, at any time, for a copy of your file. The Information Commissioner can provide consumer guidance leaflets with further advice.

    Great Idea...Lousy Name

Obviously, nobody asked the marketing guys before coming up with this one. Who in the world thought up the name "non-qualified deferred compensation?" Oh, it's descriptive alright. But who wants anything "non-qualified?" Do you want a "non-qualified" doctor, lawyer, or accountant? What's worse is deferring compensation. How many people want to work today and get paid in five years? The problem is, non-qualified deferred compensation is a great idea; it just has a lousy name.

Non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) is a powerful retirement planning tool, particularly for owners of closely held corporations (for purposes of this article, I'm only going to deal with "C" corporations). NQDC plans are not qualified for two things; some of the income tax benefits afforded qualified retirement plans and the employee protection provisions of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). What NQDC plans do offer is flexibility. Great gobs of flexibility. Flexibility is something qualified plans, after decades of Congressional tinkering, lack. The loss of some tax benefits and ERISA provisions may seem a very small price to pay when you consider the many benefits of NQDC plans.

A NQDC plan is a written contract between the corporate employer and the employee. The contract covers employment and compensation that will be provided in the future. The NQDC agreement gives to the employee the employer's unsecured promise to pay some future benefit in exchange for services today. The promised future benefit may be in one of three general forms. Some NQDC plans resemble defined benefit plans in that they promise to pay the employee a fixed dollar amount or fixed percentage of salary for a period of time after retirement. Another type of NQDC resembles a defined contribution plan. A fixed amount goes into the employee's "account" each year, sometimes through voluntary salary deferrals, and the employee is entitled to the balance of the account at retirement. The final type of NQDC plan provides a death benefit to the employee's designated beneficiary.<

The key benefit with NQDC is flexibility. With NQDC plans, the employer can discriminate freely. The employer can pick and choose from among employees, including him/herself, and benefit only a select few. The employer can treat those chosen differently. The benefit promised need not follow any of the rules associated with qualified plans (e.g. the $44,000 for 2006) annual limit on contributions to defined contribution plans). The vesting schedule can be whatever the employer would like it to be. By using life insurance products, the tax deferral feature of qualified plans can be simulated. Properly drafted, NQDC plans do not result in taxable income to the employee until payments are made.

To obtain this flexibility both the employer and employee must give something up. The employer loses the up-front tax deduction for the contribution to the plan. However, the employer will get a deduction when benefits are paid. The employee loses the security provided under ERISA. However, frequently the employee involved is the business owner which mitigates this concern. Also there are techniques available to provide the non-owner employee with a measure of security. By the way, the marketing guys have gotten hold of NQDC plans, so you'll see them called Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans or Excess Benefit Plans among other names.

The Rise of Social Conscience in Art Inspired Fashion

Art can be a means of reconstructing experiences, communicating emotions or echoing the sentiments of individuals or the masses. From the ancient to the modern, artistic works have run the table from simple observations on life to biting social commentary. The growing segment of contemporary artists who bravely showcase their displeasure with the current state of affairs using creation as an inspiration for positive social change are turning up in the strangest of places, even the world of fashion.

While the fashion industry is often viewed as an institution of pretentiousness, demand is still the driving force behind the successes and failures of it's resident elite. Just as consumability regularly forces the hand of design, or rather post runway re-design, growing discontentment and the desire to express the need for a higher social conscience is driving the union between revolutionary art and clothing.

The fashion world is not unlike the music industry, where most are willingly force fed the flavor du jour while a much smaller segment of others will seek out what suits their individual tastes. Shopping mall entrenched retailers are the "contemporary hits" formatted radio stations of the fashion world, where the top ten play list is decided on long before anyone has a chance to consider the merit of the work for themselves. Individualism in society is testing the boundaries of this formula and the effect can be seen in the increased demand for apparel that not only separates itself esthetically, but progressively as well. As more segments of society begin to understand the power of clothing as a mechanism of expression, the natural merger between avant-garde art and fashion will continue to grow. With a great multitude of artists continuing to communicate the need for changes in the way we view ourselves, our relationships with each other and the environment we live in, it seems only natural that the canvas of the human body is next in line as the foremost bearer of this message.

Tackle A Trilogy And Triple Your Profits

Are you a writer with big ideas? Are you always imagining epics, sweeping stories, great tales of human struggle and sacrifice, interlaced with personal stories of love, sadness and triumph? If so, you ought to consider turning your book or story idea into a trilogy.

Why a trilogy? Believe it or not, there are deep psychological reasons that we do things in threes. The holy trinity is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and the Triple Goddess is Maiden, Mother, Crone, detailing the feminine journey through life. How many times have you heard the phrase "third time lucky", or given someone "three guesses" or "three chances"? And of course in baseball it's "three strikes and you're out!"

You will have no doubt heard of the traditional "three act play". Almost all big Hollywood screenplays are based on this structure and it's certainly a tried and true form of storytelling that captures viewers and keeps them going back to the cinema in droves. And the world of fantasy writing is packed with trilogies: The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (that's two trilogies in fact), and any story by Sara Douglass, Robin Hobb, Trudi Canavan or pretty much any fantasy writer in the world today is told across at least one, if not more, trilogies.

Add to that the success of such popular movie franchises as Star Wars, Pirates Of The Carribean and the Bourne movies, and you will see that a well planned and executed trilogy is a one way ticket to success.

So how do you do it? Do you just take an idea and spin it out over three stories? Or do you just come up with a great character and three great premises and you're home and hosed?

    Neither actually!

The success of the trilogy is based on the traditional three act play, where book or movie one is act one, book or movie two is act two, and book or movie three is act three. The only ingredients you need are one great big story running behind three stories compelling enough to carry a movie or book on their own, and you've got the basic ingredients you need to succeed.

So if you are the type of writer who thinks big, if your scope is broad and your plots complex and intertwined, and your characters are people on a life's journey, then trying to squash that all into one book may be too many chocolate chips in the cookie. Giving yourself the room to think, plan and write a larger journey over three books will make each one a better book in its own right, and if you do get it right, you've got a guaranteed audience for books two and three. And publishers love that!

The most important element to grasp as you embark on the trilogy adventure is that you are dealing with a multilayered project. Unlike the acts of a play, the individual stories in a trilogy need to stand up on their own, in addition to playing a part in a larger drama.

So let's take a look at how you can go about turning your dreams of epic tales into the reality of a trilogy.

    How To Build Your Trilogy

    1. Decide on your over-arcing or larger story.

This is definitely the most important first step by far. Without it you don't have any story, let alone a trilogy.

Some examples of great larger stories are:

    a) a leper passes out on the floor of his lounge room and wakes to find himself in a strange land. There, instead of being treated as an outcast, he is considered a savior and the question is asked, will Thomas Covenant accept his destiny and save The Land? The larger story: will Lord Foul prevail or will Covenant save The Land?

    b) a farm boy dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. He meets a Jedi Knight and trains in the ancient art. The question is asked, will Luke Skywalker become a Jedi, save the Rebels and bring freedom to the Galaxy, or will he turn to the Dark Side like his father? The larger story: who will prevail, light or dark, good or evil, The Rebels or The Empire?

    c) a man is found floating off the coast of Marseilles. He has no idea who he is. As he attempts to find out, will he learn his true identity, or will Jason Bourne wish he'd never asked? The larger story: it is one man against the world, as Jason Bourne challenges the might of the CIA, and who will prevail?

These are just a few examples of the initial questions asked, the initial journeys laid out before the heroes and the ultimate possibilities open to the creator of a great trilogy. Nail your larger story, and backdrop it against anything from war to a love story and you'll have a great basis to work from.

    2. Each book in the trilogy is roughly the equivalent to an act in a screenplay.

In the three act play, Act One is "The Set Up" or "Decision To Act", Act Two is "The Confrontation" or "The Action" and Act Three is "The Resolution" or "The Result Of The Action".

When you are planning out your larger story (which you will do first) this breakdown will help you form the basis of each of the books in your trilogy. In Book One, you will cover the elements of the larger story that take that story through the set up phase and onto the threshold of another world, or some different action. Book Two will follow with the result of what was decided in Book One, as the story moves forward through the crisis/ordeal/midpoint and traditionally ends on a dark note. This leaves Book Three open to rescue the heroes from the jaws of defeat as the larger story reaches its climax and all the initial questions are answered. Planning this out in the earliest stages will give you very strong guidelines as to where to go with each individual book's plot, structure and characters.

    3. Each book must stand alone as a complete story in itself.

This is where you need to be very aware of the layered aspect of this process. You have a larger story you are telling in the style of the three act play. Now you need to plan, structure and write three stores within that structure that fulfill all the criteria of successful books in their own right. So take "The Set Up" phase and construct a story showing how you would set up your larger story. It's very common here to have a reluctant hero, who hears the call to adventure and refuses. Thomas Covenant is a good example of this. Thus the entire first book can be the process of the hero trying to escape the call. In a different scenario, you may have a willing hero, like Luke Skywalker or Frodo for instance and the first book may be a complete hero's journey in itself, showing how the hero is embracing the quest or task, but still leaves the greater part of the task to be completed.

Possibly the most important thing to remember is to hold information or events back as long as you can. It's tempting when you're writing a trilogy to put too much in up front, but doing that is a mistake. Give your readers some credit for intelligence and imagination, and don't tell them everything up front. Trilogies are a great tool for holding back secrets and springing surprises on your readers to keep them guessing. Good examples of this are Darth Vader revealing he is Luke's father at the end of the second episode in that trilogy, the interesting faux "love story" between Elizabeth and Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Carribean and the scene at the end of the second Bourne film which is repeated right near the climax of the third film. You are in a great position to lead your readers wherever you want them to go so use it!

    4. Your characters must have "legs".

There is nothing worse than flat, lifeless characters and there is definitely nothing worse than trying to hold our attention with these flat and lifeless characters for three whole books. Make sure you do your homework on your characters just as you would with any other book you write. Put their flaws and universal needs right there up front for us to see, you still need to grab your reader's attention from page 1. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that because you have three books you have more time and space to develop your story and characters. Wrong! If anything you are under more pressure to hook us straight away, because we're not going to keep reading if we're not interested, as we know that the story doesn't actually finish until the end of the third book.

    5. Your "golden thread" must run throughout all the three books.

This is where the intricate weaving of story on story and the skill of balancing the separate elements becomes critical. Your golden thread could be a war, a family saga over generations, a love story or a ring quest, but regardless of what it is, remember that THIS IS THE STORY YOU ARE ULTIMATELY TELLING. Star Wars is ultimately about the battle between the Rebels and the Empire, the Bourne movies are the story of one man against the CIA, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are about a leper who becomes a savior in a different world, and The Lord Of The Rings is the war of Middle-Earth. While there are countless subplots, character journeys, love stories and red herrings in all these tales, they all still have their own individual "golden threads" and ultimately the telling of the story is to serve this golden thread.

If you are prone to larger ideas, give this system a go. It may be just the breakthrough you need to get yourself on the publisher's lists.

5 Surefire Tips To Better Public Speaking

If you search in Google for the term "public speaking tips" you get roughly 2.6 million responses. That seems like a lot, but when you have to be the one standing in front of the group there isn't enough information in the world that could get you over that fear.

Believe it or not, most of those fears are self imposed. What do I mean? The people listening to you don't really care how the information is disseminated, they just want at the information. It's the speaker that puts themselves through the ringer weeks before the event. Here are some tips that may seem obvious, but once completed, will really put your mind at ease, trust me.

    Public Speaking Tip #1

KNOW YOUR TOPIC! I don't mean know your topic, I mean inside and out, upside down, what ever question someone could throw at you, you know the answer. You really need to be prepared to reach this level. You need to know your speech almost by heart; you need to know the products you will be discussing. Do your homework, you will know you have reached public speaking Nirvana when you get that "feeling", it will come with knowledge. Believe!

    Public Speaking Tip #2

Greet as many of the attendees prior to your speech as possible. Familiarity promotes confidence. Besides, think of the benefit you provide the topic you are to speak on when you take the time to meet people before you go on.
This strategy also prevents you from pacing back and forth and worrying yourself to death until you go on. There is no point in cramming now, if you don't know it, you wont, and it will show.

    Public Speaking Tip #3

DON'T think everyone in the audience is naked, this in fact will hurt your chances of a successful public speaking outing.

    Public Speaking Tip # 4

When you find yourself with only a mouthful of uhs and ums, stop yourself, repeat the sentence as if to add importance, and replace the uhs and ums with silence to allow your points to hit home.

    Public Speaking Tip # 5

Animate your speech. Most people think that good communication is mouth-centric. Nothing could be farther from the truth! To be a powerful communicator, you have to use your entire body. Gestures and body language add energy and enthusiasm to your speech.
These are tips can really help you take your next step in public speaking. Do you realize that people pass up promotions because they will be required to speak publicly?

Do you realize people fear speaking in public more than they fear dying? Maybe because dying is abstract and appears far away while the podium is right in front of them. Either way, you really can come to grips with your fear and maybe you won't enjoy it, but you'll be able to get through it easier. I can't emphasize enough that half of your battle will be just knowing what you are going to say, and anticipating what others are going to ask. It can be easy!

Corbels - Modern Uses And What To Look For

Corbels, as an architectural element, have been around for hundreds of years. Their popularity has not diminished but has, in fact, increased over time. The word "corbel" comes from the French word for raven presumably because of its "beak" like projection. Originally corbels were used as a structural component bearing a load. They were typically made of stone (though old timber corbels abound) and are still in many places supporting balconies, parapets and arches. Some of the finest examples of corbels can be seen in old Europe. The wooden variety of corbels exists in many timber frame structures especially in England. Often ornately carved, corbels were used to embellish window sills and to support oriel windows – a form of bay window that does not reach the ground. Corbel "tables" can also be viewed on older buildings. A corbel table, mostly ornamental, is a row of corbels supporting a protruding wall or a masonry strip. Another type of Corbel is an "Ancone". Greek for "elbow" or "hollow", the Ancone is a scroll shape that provided the same function as the corbel.

Presently, the use of corbels has become more of a decorative embellishment in today's modern home. Though there may be some structural purpose, their function for the most part is aesthetical. The stone corbels of yesteryear have been supplanted by their wooden counterparts. Historically, the ornamentation in corbels was patterned after Greek columns and capitals or in some cases animals or other whimsical creatures. Many examples of modern corbels follow this same historical ornamentation. The craftsman era, though, produced a plainer variety sometimes called a bracket.

Modern uses of the corbel include kitchen counter overhangs, range hoods, fireplace mantel surrounds and mantel shelves as well as spicing up cabinetry in the kitchen or elsewhere. The contemporary popularity of the corbel is certainly due to the added embellishment to otherwise plain cabinetry and millwork. That's not to say that the effect cannot be overdone. Just like any other design feature, corbels can ruin a room as well as "make" a room. The quality of the corbels can have the same effect. Poorly crafted pieces are as evident as well executed corbels.

The manufacturing process, like anything else, has an impact on the look and feel of the piece. Carving machines and CNC technology, though efficient and fast, create a piece that look massed produced. The routers used in these two methods cannot replicate the beauty and "signature" of a well executed hand-carved corbel. Even a casual observer should be able to tell the difference. The hand caved corbel will not be perfect, to be sure, but that is part of "romance" that makes this method superior to mass production. A hand-carved corbel will likely cost more but for most the price is not out of reach because most hand carved work is coming from overseas where wages are still lower than in the US. As designers, builders and architects we still have access to affordable, genuinely hand-carved corbels and as such can adorn our living spaces with them.

    Unspoken Dream: Book Review

Carol Bennett writes a stunning mystery-thriller. Her chilling entrance is one I have encountered only rarely in a book. Here, we have a victim who looks like he had been swarmed by bees in the middle of a storm, but the reader is lead to believe that it was something much more ominous and that it is about to get worse.

There are many characters in the tale, but a group of teenagers that are about to graduate from high school (Mike, Jack, Jared, Jenny, Tracy, Dana, Alan) and Sheriff Nate are the main characters. The lead character, Mike, is more like a father figure for the group in that he concerns himself with the needs of his friends and becomes a compassionate leader to his community during an emergency. His girlfriend Dana, as a sweet and supportive character, gives him strength. Shy, Jenny who is blooming into a beautiful girl has a crush on Mike's friend Jack, which sends Alan into a jealous frenzy. Though James and Tracy are dating, their buddy Jared holds a secret fondness for Tracy.

Carol did a wonderful job in portraying the characters in Unspoken Dreams. I was so involved in the story that by the time Mike finally broke down in grief for his friends' death, I had tears running down my cheeks – this was less than 2 dozen pages into the book! Mike's humorous relationship with his parents had me laughing aloud. And I felt real pity for Alan's situation.

An excellent read for those who love a good thriller with a solid rate of tension throughout the book."

    The Fastest Nation

It's quite usual for us to get to know that some American athlete wins another world or Olympic title in sprint event. Last time it was news from Helsinki World Championships, where the Americans had clear superiority over others in individual sprint disciplines. They won more titles than all other nations taken together. Of course, that's not every time that it happens, but the advantage of American athletes which is due to their high level is obvious. While athletes from other countries come to sport elite and go away, Americans always stay in. Moreover, it's impossible to imagine the sprint elite without Americans. They dominate short-distance running championships now. They have been dominating for all history of modern athletics since the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

To prove this point of view I'm giving the so-called rating of all nations' Olympic performance athletes of which ever took prices at the modern Olympic Games. A nation gets 3 points for every gold medal, silver is 2 points and bronze is 1 point. For example, at the 2004 Olympics the Americans won all medals in men's 200 meters dash. In women's 200 meters dash a Jamaican won gold, an American got silver and a Bahamian got bronze. Thus Americans get 8 points, Jamaicans - 2 point, Bahamians – 1 point. Summing up points for all years we get following statistics:

    100 meters:
    USA – 120
    Germany – 22
    Great Britain – 20
    Canada – 14
    Australia – 13
    Other countries – 69

    200 meters:
    USA – 117
    Germany – 18
    Jamaica – 16
    Australia – 14
    Great Britain – 12
    Other countries - 63

    400 meters:
    USA – 97
    Germany – 22
    Great Britain 20
    Jamaica – 13
    Australia – 12
    Other countries – 52

In every event Americans are far ahead of others. However, even if we take into consideration such a huge advantage, it might be still wrong to say that other countries' athletes are much worse trained. During the twentieth century there were stars among British, Canadian, Caribbean and other sprinters whose achievements have become part of sports history. Many of them are Olympic and world champions. There also world record holders among them. Now we talk about Asafa Powell, Veronica Campbell and Tonique Williams-Darling. We also remember Linford Christie, Donovan Bailey, Marita Koch and Marie-Jose Perec from the past.

However, the point is that they are the only representatives of their nations. They come into sports, show outstanding performance and go away followed by no compatriots matching their level. But only the USA athletes show high-level performance constantly. It's quite hard to find reasons for it taking into account that the level of training process is also high in many other countries. Actually it is not the training process itself that differs the States from other countries. It is rather sports system organization which selects, raises and motivates athletes.

    Prevalent approach to athletics

There are two models of sports system organization in the world.

The first one is the system of state financing developed in most countries. State Sports Department exercises supervision over Sports Federations which provide athletes with good conditions for trainings, medicine care, opportunities for preparations and so on. The State takes care of athletes from the beginning of their career and they feel comfortable in such conditions.

Many of them come into athletics and train like for fun, considering running from this point of view: "I have an opportunity for training. First I will train for fun and will see if I am good in running. If I'm good, I will pay more attention to trainings. If I'm not, I will just enjoy the achieved level. My country will take care of me and will give me an opportunity to afford such "pleasure" trainings." For some of them sprint is a hobby. Some of them achieve good results at the local level performing time of 10.4-10.2 seconds in 100-meters dash, and think that it is good enough. Those who are highly motivated progress further and sometimes take prizes at international level. But most of such sprinters don't even reach a 10-second barrier let alone 9.8-9.7 second time which is necessary for major competitions.

So there are no good selection process and no high competing environment in such a system.

    The National Collegiate Athletic Association

One more model is when business interferes with sports and government doesn't take part in the process simply providing the athletes with conditions. Such model is developed in the USA. Besides professional sports, there is a unique system of university sports organization which gives birth to a huge amount of world-famous stars in athletics. The National Collegiate Athletic Association sports are fantastically popular and widely covered on television and in press. Even world-known bookmakers provide lines for bets on NCAA leagues. No country in the world can boast of such situation. College teams receive huge money from their team sponsors and are interested in achieving high results attracting well-trained athletes. It means that skilled athletes receive scholarships which cover expenses on study and living. For many of them such way is the only chance to enter a university. Thus athletes who competed for a university team are highly motivated in achieving good results. They don't just train, they secure stability of their lives. Very often at NCAA championships college athletes achieve higher results than professional athletes of other countries.

There is one more positive aspect of the USA model. Several sport events are extremely popular in the United States. These are football, basketball, baseball, hockey, track and field and some others. Almost all universities have their own teams for participating in these sports. If an athlete at the beginning of his career chooses some event, and some time later it turns out that he is much better in some other event, he can simply change an event within the same university. There are many such examples among Olympic champions at sprint events. Marion Jones who was member of her university basketball team, later became the fastest woman in the world. Famous sprinter Ato Boldon started his career playing soccer. Jim Hines used to be a baseball player in his early years. Eddie Tolan won Michigan state football championships as a high school boy. Much more examples could be mentioned.

Such conditions give an opportunity to find out really talented athletes, and hard competition compels them to develop their skills very fast. Yesterday's NCAA champions become top world athletes today. Now it is John Capel, Shawn Crawford, Justin Gatlin, Jeremy Wariner and Lauryn Williams. In future there will be new stars and the National Collegiate Athletic Association model will never fail.

It's worth mentioning that Caribbean athletes are good too. But note that many of them studied in American universities.

One might ask why American athletes are not so good at long distance running as they are at sprint events. The answer is simple – they like action. It's much more interesting for them to watch a 100-meter race during 10 seconds than wait for the end of a 10-kilometers race for a half of an hour. They are crazy about eye-catching shows. And what could be more eye-catching than short-distance running? It's not just a part of running or athletics, it's another kind of sport, where limits of human body performance come out. That's why they just go and grab world and Olympic titles in sprint and left the rest of events for the others.
